The bundle of paper Kaneko had been carrying was revealed to be a heap of maps. Specifically, maps of the school, and she'd now spread one across the the table for Satake and me to view.

I didn't know where she'd retrieved them from, and I didn't want to ask.

Satake was standing to attention like a secretary waiting for her morning set of instructions. She likely shared the same suspicions as me in regards to the maps' origins, but since she tended to dote on Kaneko like a newborn kitten, I didn't hold any strong hopes that she'd ever question her possible misdemeanours. So long as they were relatively minor, of course.

“We need a scandal or a love story,” stated Kaneko, being a person who would sadly never go on to become a presidential speech writer. “We need to shovel up the mud that people want to keep hidden from everyone else.”

“Can I get the good news first?” I said. “The lack of ethics aside, how do you intend to find that kind of stuff?”

“Easily,” she said, looking increasingly like a field commander assessing enemy positions as she loomed over the map with felt-tip pen in hand. “Especially with what I've got in mind.”

“I don't get it. Are we going treasure hunting?”

“Almost.”

I could already tell. The first casualty from Kaneko joining this club would be the personal privacy of everyone around her. Myself included.

“Kaneko, wait.” I had no wish to see her with an expulsion note on her school records. “You have to be careful about what you do on school grounds, as well as what you're trying to get from people. Nobody will appreciate having chitchat fished out of them, and it won't look good to write about that kind of stuff, either.”
